Sami Lushtaku, elected as mayor of Skendaraj, stands accused of committing war crimes during the Kosovo War.

The new mayor of Skendaraj in Kosovo has just been sworn in, but he will serve the beginning of his term from jail.

Sami Lushtaku is accused of committing war crimes during the Kosovo War between 1998 and 1999.

The European Union allowed him out of prison to take his oath behind closed doors, but he had to return immediately after.

Lushtaku is one of 15 of the so-called Drenica group charged by the EU law mission with killing and mistreating civilian prisoners in a detention centre.

Al Jazeera’s Alexi O’Brien reports.
