Vetëvendosje deputy leader, Aida Dërguti, writes in her regular column of this daily that Kosovo citizens are used to hear at least a sentence on European integration, during each news edition. “This subject intensifies during the election campaigns, when in order to gain votes deadlines on visa liberalization are promised. Visa liberalization for many citizens of Kosovo who live in social misery, means opening of the gate for employment at some European country. To the unemployed and youth, who make the majority of Kosovo’s population, promises for European integration bring alive the dream for a better life. In other words, the way towards EU is felt as the way to some paradise in this land, where food, shelter, education, healthcare and employment are possible for everyone. This time, Urlike Lunacek, informed us that there are no chances for visa liberalization before 2016. So the hopes of citizens for the fist small step towards European integration, are ruined. We should express appreciation to Ms. Lunacek for this clarification, for at least the political parties will not be able to abuse with promises during the next election campaign, because the citizens will not believe them.” Says Dërguti.

Using the “European integration” slogan, Kosovo Government held endless negotiations with Serbia for years. “The road towards European integration for the countries of Balkans, is deviating also due to the internal developments at EU. And, since the integration appears to be too far, a new, mentioned project of a Balkans Union called G6, where Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia would be members and Belgrade would be the capital, has been initiated with the recent joint meetings of the Governments of Kosovo and Albania and Edi Rama’s visit to Belgrade.

This kind of integration should not be considered a step towards EU integration. The road to EU is much more difficult than that of Dorothy in Wizard of Oz, she concludes, adding that mixing of the road could bring unpredictable consequences.
