International intelligence sources told the paper that thirty Kosovars have traveled to Syria during January while their total number, depending on sources, varies from 4 to 400. One thing is for sure however, adds the paper, and that is that six citizens from Kosovo have so far been killed in the Syrian battlefields. Majority of Kosovars fighting in the conflict come from the region of Mitrovica, Prizren, and Kaçanik.
Officials from the Kosovo Police told the paper that most of the Kosovars that are travelling to Syria are in a difficult economic condition and some are known to the police for having radical Islamic beliefs while a number of them also have criminal records. Police said that considering these volunteer fighters have received military training and participated in combat activities, it is not ruled out that they could also have had contacts with terrorist organizations.
