Some Serbian politicians have great enthusiasm when it comes to the pace at which the country can advance along the EU path. That is nice, but one has to be realistic. To secure full membership, you will need eight years at least, Kukan told the Belgrade-based daily Vecernje Novosti that was issued on Wednesday.
Kukan, who was Slovakia’s foreign minister during the country’s EU accession negotiations, noted that Serbia has to go through all 35 chapters which is a very slow administrative process, adding that just the screening will last until spring next year.
Asked whether early elections will slow down Serbia’s progress toward the EU, Kukan said that elections are an internal issue of Serbia, adding that all efforts should be aimed continuing the successful EU integration process.
It is important that the internal political situation does not have an adverse effect on the good results that this government has achieved on the EU path. They did deliver on everything they had said, Kukan concluded.
