The paper’s front-page editorial notes that according to Kosovo Government officials the establishment of a tribunal that would try alleged crimes committed by members of the former Kosovo Liberation Army would seriously damage the image of the republic. “The image of our republic however has been damaged by bad governance, corruption, injustice and many other negative phenomena that are gaining alarming dimensions in the seventh year of independence. We should not hold others accountable for our country’s image, because those responsible are among us; in fact they are at the helm of political parties and institutions. They are the first to challenge the law and the last to make sacrifices for the state. Kosovo politicians need to admit that they have turned their craft into a profitable business and money has overwhelmed their mission, programmes and actions. It is no accident that although we are the youngest country in Europe we have the richest and best-paid politicians that live in luxury, constantly increase their salaries and further increase the social gap in Kosovar society. Politicians above the law have stained Kosovo’s image and this should change as quickly as possible. The country needs a powerful transformation, reforms in political parties, punishment of corrupt officials and confiscation of illegally-accumulated wealth. Only the rule of law will improve our declining image.”
