Today is the International Day of Mine Awareness which aims to raise awareness about landmines and progress toward their eradication.

United Nations have declared 4 April as International Day for Mine Awareness eon 8 December 2005 and it was first observed in 2006.

It called for continued efforts by states, with assistance from the UN and relevant organizations, to help establish and develop national mine-action capacities in countries where mines and explosive war remnants constitute a serious threat to the safety, health and lives of people.

In Kosovo, reports Telegrafi, the Kosovo Security Force has launched demining operations in five sites across the territory of Kosovo where there are still landmines and other explosive ordnance.

Since 2010, KSF has managed to clear 820,428 square metres of land and has demolished 10,095 mines and other explosive material as part of the humanitarian demining process.
