Brussels-based correspondent Augustin Palokaj writes that it is remorseful that it has taken 15 years to solve the fate of war veterans. “War veterans and their families, especially those who lost their loved ones during the war, were in need of assistance the whole time. Most of them have become social cases and there is growing disappointment. Some of them rightfully asked ‘why did we fight’ and ‘is this the Kosovo we fought for?’ Part of the blame falls on the combatants because they allowed themselves to be manipulated for political purposes, to be divided and manipulated by people who, in normal countries and societies, would be known as and punished as war profiteers … Minister Agim Ceku, who heads the committee for the verification of the status of war veterans, must have experience from Croatia. He should use this experience to draw on good and bad lessons. He should not allow the list of war veterans to include more people who saw fighting only on their TV sets than real combatants … There needs to be justice for the true combatants in Kosovo. If false combatants are included, this should be a great injustice for true combatants.”
