Kosovo will ask the EU to set up a special tribunal outside the country, to address war crimes committed in the 1990s.

According to Kosovo’s President Atifete Jahjaga, a specialized court outside the country to look at cases against former Kosovo Liberation Army fighters would ensure an “independent and unbiased process”.

The President has gathered the support of the majority of political parties, but a vote is still to take place in Parliament. It will also decide on extending the EULEX rule of law mission until 2016, Balkan Insight reported.

The special tribunal will look at cases of human rights abuse by Kosovo Liberation Army members in 1998-1999, brought to light in a Council of Europe report in 2010. A number of current Parliament MPs, as well as Prime Minister Hashim Thaci are mentioned in the report.
