The governments of Kosovo and Albania met today in Kukes to commemorate the exodus of Kosovo Albanians during the 1999 conflict and to honour all Albanians who provided shelter to refugees. Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said the commemoration should not be seen by others as inciting hatred but rather as a story about the truth. “Today we pay our utmost respect to the sacrifice of Kosovo citizens and to the hospitality of the citizens of Kukes, Has, Bajram Curr, Tropoja and other towns and cities in Albania. Sixteen years ago, hundreds of thousands of civilians, who were expelled by the aggressor, found refuge in this country. Today, the Albanian nation is stronger and more united in its path to a better future. The crimes that were committed were not only against our people, but against all of mankind. By remembering them, we don’t want to incite hatred, but rather to tell the truth. The exodus was a great test for our nation and we survived the storm by showing unprecedented solidarity. We take pride in the fact that the Republic of Albania today celebrates the fifth anniversary of its membership in NATO and I hope that very soon it will get the candidate status for membership in the European Union. Kosovo is ready and has all the potential to overcome the challenges it faces, especially in economic development. Kosovo is a modern state and is a model for respecting human and minority rights. Kosovo is a factor of stability and security in the region and very soon will join various international humanitarian initiatives,” Thaci said.
