The President of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga, will try this week to bring leaders of parliamentary parties at the same table with the aim of finding a solution to the political deadlock. Sources told Lajmi that this will be Jahjaga’s final effort before she announces her final decision next week, which could include new parliamentary elections. A source from the Office of the President, who preferred to remain anonymous, told the news agency: “A solution for the current stalemate should and can be found within the decision of the Constitutional Court and the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo. This is the position of President Jahjaga and she enjoys strong support from the international community, especially from the United States”.
The source said calculations by political parties are reasonable as long as they don’t jeopardize national interests. “Kosovo is on the verge of a deep institutional and economic crisis and if there is no swift reaction we will face irreparable consequences,” he said. “Party leaders, for their own interests have brought the country to this point; therefore, President Jahjaga will not tolerate this for long and will give the people the opportunity to go to polling stations in 45 days”.
The source also said that early elections are the final resort given the financial cost and also because in the best-case scenario the country would not have new institutions for at least another two-three months. “This is why neither the President nor friendly countries are interested in new elections. However, a solution must be found, and it will be reached very soon, in a matter of days,” he added.
