Belgrade (dpa) – The two largest political parties in Kosovo agreed late Wednesday to form a government, breaking a deadlock that persisted since elections were held more than five months ago.

Prime Minister Hashim Thaci’s Democratic Party and opposition leader Isa Mustafa’s Democratic League of Kosovo reached the deal in a meeting with President Atifete Jahjaga and the US ambassador to Pristina, Tracy Jacobson.

The two parties control 67 of the 120 seats in parliament. With minority representatives expected to join, the coalition is set to have a superior majority.

Bickering among Kosovo’s leaders since the indecisive outcome of the June 8 elections has blocked the establishment of a new parliament, angering the West, which strongly supported Kosovo’s secession from Serbia in 2008.

In early November Jacobson warned politicians: “Don’t screw this up.”
