Around 1200 women reported domestic violence (Epoka e Re)

The executive director of the Center for Protection of Women and Children in Pristina, Naime Sherifi, told the Anadolu Agency, that the economic dependency factor makes women powerless to be protected from domestic violence. According to her, in the last three years, the number of victims was around 1000 annually, while in 2014 this number has reached 1200 women who reported domestic violence. Sherifi said that in the Safe House in Pristina, last year were housed 470 women, victims of domestic violence. In the context of protecting human rights, Kosovo government in 2011 approved the Action Plan to combat domestic violence. Also under the Ministry of Justice is created the Agency for Gender Equality, while in the Inter-ministerial Coordination Group Against Domestic Violence, in the capacity of monitoring, are included members of civil society, in particular non-governmental organizations that deal with gender equality and women’s rights, and international organizations like USAID and UNDP. This group works to prevent and combat domestic violence in Kosovo, by coordinating, monitoring and reporting on implementation of policies, activities and actions foreseen under the Programme Against Domestic Violence and Action Plan 2011-2014.
