The Serb representatives in the institutions of Kosovo decided on Wednesday to demand reform of the media law, which is necessary to fulfil the constitutional obligation of establishing an independent Serb television in Kosovo.
At a meeting in Gracanica, they also agreed to urge the Belgrade negotiation team to include the matter of launching an independent Serbian-language television in the agenda of the Brussels talks.
The meeting was organized by the Journalists’ Association of Serbia (UNS), and its participants included journalists and officials of the Serbian government’s Office for Kosovo and Metohija.
The participants pointed out that in order to establish a television channel in Serbian, the law on radio and television of Kosovo needs to be amended. The amendments should ensure that the TV channel in Serbian has a management board, management, independent source of funding, and program-based cooperation with independent productions and local televisions.
The UNS was asked to draft an amendment which the Serb MPs in the Kosovo parliament will submit to the law on specialist chamber for the crimes in Kosovo committed from January 1, 1998 to December 31, 2000, seeking to expand the mandate of this court to investigating murders and kidnappings of journalists who were killed or went missing in that period.
