European Union membership is not possible without compromise, Belgrade and Pristina should understand that without successful accomplishment of negotiations there would be no progress toward our joint European future, said chairperson of the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence, Sonja Liht.

Liht said to North Mitrovica-based paper Jedinstvo that this was and the message of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel who commended Belgrade during her recent visit, first of all for its readiness for reaching compromise.

Lihg claims that there won’t be new conditions set to Serbia  before and during negotiations on its path to the EU membership, however full normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina will be requested.

“Brussels Agreement is necessary for stabilization of our region, however it is also and the test whether we are ready to become, in future, members of the European family of peoples,” said Liht.

Implementation of the Brussels Agreement is at the moment a precondition for the opening of chapter 35, stressed Liht, and added that this is important since the EU members states are determined not to allow membership to any state that has unsettled issues within its borders or with neighbors.

The core part of the Brussels Agreement, according to her, refers to the rights of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija, and the frame for its realization is the creation of the Association/Community of Serb municipalities, since without its creation there won’t be implementation of the Agreement.

Liht further said that implementation of the Agreement is necessary, however it is not a sufficient condition for the progress in European integrations of Serbia, since negotiations can’t open unless Action plans for chapters 23 and 24 are adopted, which refer to the rule of law and human rights.
