Kosovo Center for Security Studies (KCSS), supported by the European Union Office in Kosovo, organized a round-table discussion today on “The role of women in preventing violent extremism in Kosovo”. During this meeting it was said that the role of women is crucial to preventing violent extremism.
The President of the Islamic Community in Vushtrri, Shemsi Rrahimi, said that the role of the mother is vital to educating her children to prevent them to join foreign wars. While Aferdita Merovci from the Kosovo Police said that the main factor that young people take this route is the difficult economic situation. Florim Shatrolli from the anti-terrorism division in KP, said that there are about 20 females involved in the fight for ISIS, but according to him, they are treated as victims because they were pressured to join that war.
The participants addressed challenges in the prevention of violent extremism in Kosovo, which resulted in the participation of a large number of persons from Kosovo participating in foreign wars (Syria and Iraq), including women. Participants of this round-table were representatives of the civil society, human rights activists, EU Office in Kosovo, Kosovo Police, Kosovo Security Force and Kosovo Islamic Community.
