Kerry pushes Kosovo in UNESCO (Vecernje Novosti)

In the finish of struggle between Belgrade and Pristina over every vote ‘against’ or ‘pro’ Kosovo’s membership in UNESCO, the US state secretary John Kerry has sent a letter of support to Kosovo Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hashim Thaci, with regard to Kosovo’s membership in this organization.

The wind in the back of Pristina came from Washington just a day ahead of the start of 197th session of UNESCO’s Executive Board, and a week before a decision is made by that body whether Kosovo’s request for membership, submitted by Albania in behalf of Kosovo, would be put on the daily agenda of that body. This doubtlessly hinders Belgrade’s position, which is using all diplomatic means to win majority of 58 member parties of the Executive Board.

Even before the US motion, it was estimated that chances of Serbia are slim at the session of the Executive Board, numbering 58 member parties, since there are 32 member states, which recognized Kosovo, seating in the board. From this reason it is most probable that Pristina would receive the recommendation for membership in UNESCO this month. However, even if this takes place, Serbia would have more maneuvering space at the UNESCO’s General Assembly in November, where Pristina’s membership would have to receive a two-third majority of 195 member parties participating in the voting.
