While waiting for the Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić’s solution for ‘very complex situation’ following recommendation of the European Commission for opening the Chapter 35 in EU accession process, whose content has deeply disturbed Belgrade, parliamentarian opposition such as Democratic Party (DS) pledges for more active government’s policy with regard to Kosovo, whereas extra-parliamentarian parties announced creation of wider political block, which will request staging a referendum with the question: Are you for the EU membership if the price would be recognition of Kosovo?

According to the DS caucus whip in the Serbian parliament Borislav Stefanović, government could use any situation for staging early elections, and added that content of the Chapter 35 was expected and that Serbian government should try, in cooperation with the states that didn’t recognize Kosovo, to amend really bad terminology in this document that is supported by the powerful EU states. He also claims that Belgrade should take the initiative and propose the text of a binding agreement with Pristina, in order to avoid that this document is prepared by others.

Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) yesterday warned general public that a referendum with the clear question: ‘Are you for the EU membership if the price would be recognition of Kosovo?’ should not, and must not, be replaced with early elections because it would present boldest deception and effort in providing the apparent legitimacy for betraying state, national and economic interest of Serbia.

The chairperson of the Active Serbia, Dušan Janjić, argues that there is neither a need for referendum nor for early elections, because, according to him, what bothers authorities has nothing to do with Kosovo, but with their internal relations, what can’t be settled in elections. Janjić claims that problem arose due to the clear political decision on Serbia’s membership in the European Union, that is, recommendation for opening the Chapter 35, what is faced with certain resistance in Serbia.
