BRIC countries don’t want Pristina in UNESCO (Vecernje Novosti)

Serbia has activated all diplomatic mechanisms to ensure a minimum of 50 votes of UNESCO member states, to pull down the ramp for Pristina’s membership in this organization. If Serbia reaches the “critical mass” of support, there are chances that Pristina does not receive the necessary two-thirds majority for the chair in UNESCO. That would mean that the whole thing is postponed for a minimum two years.

The entire state leadership and our diplomatic service are in constant contact with the authorities in dozens of countries, which are under the pressure of powerful states that are sponsors of Kosovo’s independence. Heads of state, prime ministers and foreign ministers sent letters in which they warned that the admission of Pristina would be a dangerous precedent.

Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic confirmed that extensive diplomatic offensive is on-going: “Our ambassadors and diplomats are talking every day with officials from the countries in which they serve. Math is not on our side, but many influential countries are. These are, among others, all BRIC countries – Russia, China, India, South Africa and Brazil – as well as Cuba, Argentina, Spain …
