Around 32,000 people have been denied Kosovo citizenship since 2009. According to the Kosovo Ministry of Interior, the reason for this is that some EU countries do not allow dual citizenship for citizens who are not part of the European Union. On the other hand, 6,000 people applied for Kosovo citizenship, but only about 1,200 obtained it. People who acquired Kosovo citizenship are mostly from neighboring countries, which allow one or more nationalities. Data from January-December 2015 show that more than 16,000 people returned to Kosovo from different countries.
