Blerim Shala, member of the Kosovo Assembly and Kosovo’s political coordinator of talks with Belgrade in Brussels, writes in an opinion piece about “the four key principles that according to the people of Kosovo should be respected by all those that want to engage in politics in Kosovo”. Shala argues that if Kosovo politicians, both those that are in government and the opposition, want to make Kosovo a sustainable state they need to respect the principles that are crucial for the interests of the people. “First, this politics needs to guarantee security in the country … The citizens of Kosovo should not be afraid to go out in the city fearing the violence that derives from politics. The citizens of Kosovo must not be afraid for their safety as a result of images coming from the Kosovo Assembly … Security certainly needs to be provided and guaranteed throughout the territory of Kosovo,” Shala writes. “Second, liberty in Kosovo cannot be a safe value if there is no genuine rule of law and if all citizens are not equal before the law and if politicians do not obey the law … Third, Kosovar politics needs to focus much more on economic development and the social well-being of its citizens. We all know the reasons why these two key topics have been marginalized … Four, Kosovo’s politics must not offer a single argument of doubt when it comes to Kosovo’s relations with the West, especially relations with the United States of America and the building of relations with the European Union.”
