Shala: Producing political stability (Lajmi)

Blerim Shala, member of Kosovo’s Parliament and coordinator of the Kosovo delegation in the Brussels talks, argues in an opinion piece that “it would be wrong to assume that we have entered a period of political stability; this stability has been lacking since the parliamentary elections held in June two years ago”. “We are the ones that have yet to ‘produce’ such stability and the only way to do this is by installing a truly political dialogue, which will be sustainable only if it establishes clear parliamentary mechanisms and precise timelines for resolving key political topics. The list of these topics must certainly be agreed by the participants in the dialogue and this process should start as soon as possible. It is becoming increasingly evident that this dialogue must include two topics that were thoroughly addressed in parliamentary committees in 2012, the drafting of the new law on general elections and the amendment of the Constitution for the office of the President of Kosovo. Kosovo can now also seek the assistance of the Venice Commission in concluding these two important topics. Dialogue as such can provide not only new topics and new solutions but can also ensure a new political quality in the country which has been lacking completely since 2014 onward,” Shala writes. He further notes that a recent poll with Kosovo’s citizens revealed “two significant data which show that Kosovo’s political scene, in the last couple of months, is lost in space and time”. “The absolute priority of the respondents in this poll are social topics, unemployment and the fight against corruption … Over 85% of the respondents want the current political problems to be resolved through genuine dialogue between the political parties in the country, both those in government and those in the opposition. This is a very clear message from the people of Kosovo for political developments in the country”.
