Position of the German government when it comes to relations between Belgrade and Pristina is based on the negotiation framework, which does not require recognition of Kosovo’s independence, reads the answer of the German Government lead by Angela Merkel on 31 questions on Serbia, forwarded to it by a group of the MPs of German Left Party, to which Deutsche Welle had an insight.

This negotiation framework, signed by Serbia in 2014, requires ‘comprehensive normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo in a form of a binding document’ until the end of the accession negotiations with the EU. However, it doesn’t require ‘recognition of Kosovo by Serbia’. On the other side, MP Sevim Dagdelen understands position of Brussels and Berlin as ‘de facto   forcing’ Serbia to recognize Kosovo if it wants to join the EU. Dagdalen said to DW that this can destabilize the Balkans.

German Left Party is the only party in the German parliament that is opposed to independence of Kosovo and further expansion of Nato.
