Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Chepurin this weekend in Mitrovica said that the basis of resolving the Kosovo problem is the Resolution 1244 of the United Nations Security Council. Does the statement say little more than already known principled Russian policy towards Kosovo?

– There is an initiative to verify the current level of normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina with a new resolution, or to change the existing one, about which are conducted consultations already – says analyst Dušan Janjić and connoisseur of the Kosovo problem, reports the Russian portal Sputnik.

– The Chinese and Russian veto are obstacles, the initiators are clear with this. Therefore, they may lead to a new UN General Assembly resolution, which would mention Resolution 1244, but also objectively, to verify the new situation and facilitate the entry of Kosovo to the United Nations, even as an observer, as Palestine now – says Janjić.

He notes that what Ambassador Chepurin said about Resolution 1244 does not mean that Moscow has no developed strategy, but that serious diplomacy, and Russian certainly is, announces when it has something special to highlight, says Janjić.

– I’m sure that the assessment of Moscow, that as long it holds the Resolution 1244 in its hands it has a powerful negotiation trump card, and with Washington and Brussels, as well as with Belgrade – says Janjić.
