Serbia has made “major steps toward its strategic goal of EU membership by opening four very significant chapters.”

This is according to EU Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn, who also noted that “strengthening of the rule of law remained the main challenge,” Tanjug reported.

“Now it needs to move resolutely, not only as regards the various chapters, but the rule of law and the normalization of the relations with Kosovo,” Hahn told the Belgrade-based newspaper Vecernje Novosti in an interview.

The current positive momentum must be seized, he said, expressing the hope that EU members would agree to open new chapters by the end of this year.

“Strengthening the rule of law, including the fight against organized crime and corruption, remain the main challenges. Serbia would have to pass new laws and strengthen institutions, and that the EC and the EU member states would monitor its efforts closely,” Hahn said.
