President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, hailed today the report of the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor on Human Rights Practices saying it identified progress as well as challenges in protection of human rights. In a Facebook post, Thaci wrote: “It is regrettable that the first problem mentioned is violence in the Assembly of Kosovo and the obstruction of free debate.” Thaci also highlighted the report’s finding that corruption remains a problem in Kosovo as does discrimination of individuals based on their ethnic background, gender, religion or sexual orientation.  “As president I am committed on further consolidation of the rule of law so that we close any possibility for someone avoiding the law. I have promoted dialogue between all communities and have worked in favour of rights of all communities,” Thaci wrote adding that upholding human rights is not only a responsibility of institutions but of the society as well.
