The paper’s Brussels-based correspondent, Augustin Palokaj, writes in an opinion piece that “the European Union has really insisted that Kosovo is sui generis and that it cannot be compared to Catalonia. But the EU never said that Kosovo’s independence is acceptable. When Serbia’s leaders now ask for explanations ‘why Kosovo can be independent and Catalonia not’, they don’t really want to know the answer. President Vucic, Foreign Minister Dacic, and others, know better than Brussels why Kosovo is sui generis. Serbia now wants to use the EU’s concern over Catalonia to prevent further international recognitions of Kosovo, its integration in international structure and to alleviate the pressure Belgrade faces to accept the reality of the existence of the state of Kosovo”.
