EULEX Mission stated it has received a request from the Serbian authorities in November last year to arrest Radomir Laban, who has been appointed by the Kosovo Assembly as a Constitutional Court judge, but the Mission given its current mandate cannot undertake such action, Serbian media reported.
EULEX added they have informed Basic Court in Kraljevo, which requested their assistance about this fact.
Radomir Laban was appointed as a Kosovo Constitutional Court judge at a proposal and with the support of Srpska Lista, which in its elaboration stated Laban has extensive legal experience, professional reputation in public and constitutional laws, and possesses “high moral qualities and integrity,” RTS further said.
Laban is wanted by the Serbian judicial authorities over the prison sentence in duration of 6 years, and he is among a group of 21 sentenced persons in a so-called “Customs’ Mafia” case held before the Special Court for Organized Crime in Belgrade in 2012.
An Interpol warrant is also issued for him as per request of the Serbian Justice Ministry, while Basic Court in Kraljevo sent a plea to the EU Special Representative Office in Pristina asking them to take measures within their authorities and “deprive Laban of freedom” in order for him to serve his prison sentence.
In the meantime, Hashim Thaci’s cabinet told Radio Free Europe, that Kosovo President “due to allegations related to Laban’s past that surfaced,” would not decree him until responsible security and judicial bodies do not conduct a thorough verification, RTS reported.
