Kosovo’s chief prosecutor Aleksander Lumezi has released a statement to the media following the resignation of special prosecutor Elez Blakaj who is alleged to have been led to the move after receiving threats. Lumezi said he was never officially informed that Blakaj received threats as a result of his work. Lumezi said while working on a case relating to KLA war veterans lists, Blakaj had alerted authorities that a medical commission within the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare tasked with deciding the status of disabled veterans had received threats. “Prosecutor Blakaj’s request was reviewed and Kosovo Police decided to increase patrolling at the workplace of the commission and established occasional contacts to ensure the process goes as planned,” the statement says. Further to this, Blakaj reported to have received on Facebook a message telling him to convict criminals not imams in reference to another case he was working on. In this case, Blakaj said he was not concerned about his personal safety but that of his immediate family to whom the police provided escort.
