Kosovo Prime Minister, Ramush Haradinaj, took to Facebook today to say that he has written to foreign ambassadors in Pristina about the case of Elez Blakaj, who recently resigned his post as prosecutor after he submitted a draft indictment about “fake war veterans”. Haradinaj writes: “I have sent a letter to ambassadors and officials of liaison offices in Kosovo, explaining my unconditional support to all the requests by now-former prosecutor, Elez Blakaj, to conduct investigations in the Office of the KLA War Categories about the issue of the Veterans’ List. Former prosecutor Blakaj came to my office and asked for two weeks to conduct investigations in the archive. I was available at all times and was very willing to help the process. We agreed that after 30 days he would provide us with a report on the course of investigations, namely if he was able to investigate without interference, unbiased and with full integrity. The Government of the Republic of Kosovo and central institutions are determined to strengthen the rule of law throughout Kosovo. Policies we have drafted, and which are being implemented in the rule of law area include, among other things, strengthening the role of prosecutors and judges, increasing the sectorial budget, higher salaries and better working conditions. These policies have restored dignity and have strengthened the system by improving efficiency, transparency and accountability. Because of these efforts, allow me to express my belief and profound commitment that every single case, including the case that Mr. Blakaj was working on, deserves an independent investigation and that judicial institutions must work free from any influence. Unfortunately, individuals like Mr. Blakaj, who attacked Kosovo’s judiciary through the media, tried to undermine efforts to strengthen the rule of law in Kosovo. This case will not hinder our strong determination for a fully-functioning judiciary in Kosovo”.
