The UN Security Council will discuss tomorrow again about Kosovo, despite the request of some countries not to discuss developments in Kosovo every three months. Experts of political developments claim the idea of exchange of territories, made the UNMIK mission to be seen as necessary.

These experts relate continuance of the reporting at the UN SC to the current political circumstances Kosovo is experiencing.

The idea of correction of the Kosovo-Serbia border could have reflected also on decision of some UN member countries about withdrawal of their mission in Kosovo. Therefore, UNMIK remains in the eyes of many countries as a necessary mission, says professor at Paris University, Nezir Keaki.

“Unfortunately, it appears that recent initiatives in Kosovo for exchange of territories, for re-discussion of the status, all matters which appeared these recent months, have returned Kosovo in the drawer of unfinished issues, therefore, being in the new political drawer, it is normal for UNMIK to remain in the eyes of many countries, relevant and necessary,” he said.

Even though UNMIK role in Kosovo today is faded, change, adoption or conclusion of the mandate of this mission can be reached only with the approval of a new resolution. Afrim Hoti, professor of the international law, told Radio Kosova that Resolution 1244, which gave mandate to UNMIK in Kosovo, should be replaced with e new resolution.

Mandate of the Provisional Administration of the United Nations in Kosovo (UNMIK) was determined by the Security Council, through resolution 1244 in 1999.
