Kosovo Assembly MPs approved today the legislation package transforming the Kosovo Security Force (KSF) into a military force, media report. Koha notes that in a rare show of unity, Assembly of Kosovo Assembly approved the three draft laws giving KSF additional powers and transforming KSF Ministry into a Ministry of Defence. Zeri writes that with over 100 votes in favour from all political parties, with the exception of Serbian List, Kosovo Assembly approved the draft laws changing KSF’s mandate but not also its name.
The law on KSF duties and competencies consists of three paragraphs the first stating that “KSF will protect the territorial integrity, citizens, property and interests of the Republic od Kosovo” and that it will be a multiethnic, professional, armed, and authorised to serve inside and outside of Kosovo. KSF will furthermore be tasked with protection of Kosovo’s territorial integrity, protection of Kosovo citizens and communities, military support to civilian authorities, and participation in international peacekeeping operations.
