UNMIK chief on regular visit to Belgrade (N1)

UNMIK chief Zahir Tanin met in Belgrade on Monday with Serbia’s Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic who told him that the UN mission has to remain in Kosovo to secure the conditions for the Serbs to live normal lives.

A press release from the prime minister’s cabinet said that Brnabic warned of rising tensions following incidents between Albanians and Serbs in Kosovo, adding that she expected future UNMIK reports to reflect the real situation on the ground in Kosovo to a greater extend, including the everyday problems facing Serbs and other non-Albanians.

She is quoted as saying that UN Security Council sessions devoted to UNMIK reports should continue to be held as they have been to date and voicing dissatisfaction over the fact that one of those regular sessions was not held in August. Her words were echoed by Foreign Minister Dacic who said that the important thing is to maintain the format of the UN Security Council sessions on the situation in Kosovo, especially while Belgrade is investing effort to find a compromise solution with Pristina.

A foreign ministry press release said that they discussed “the sensitive security and political situation in Kosovo especially in the context of the series of provocative and unilateral steps taken by Pristina recently which run counter to the spirit of dialogue and serve to raise tensions”.

Tanin is quoted as saying that UNMIK’s job is to make objective, regular reports on the situation on the ground to assist UN and European Union institutions. He also expressed concern over incidents in the past few months and condemned the stoning of a bus full of Serbs in the Istok municipality.
