Vucic says he refused to agree to UN membership for Kosovo (N1, Beta)

The Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic claimed on Thursday that he resisted pressure to accept Kosovo’s membership in the United Nations.

President Aleksandar Vucic told a crowd in the southern town of Leskovac that official Belgrade had come under pressure to allow Kosovo into the UN in 2013 but that he refused to agree even when threatened with an end to his political career.

Speaking during the visit to the Jablanica District as part of his Future of Serbia campaign, Vucic said that there are many people who do not want to see a successful Serbia.

“When they saw Serbia, a country which was drowning in debts at the time, rise economically to achieve a surplus in trade with all Balkan countries, with unemployment dropping faster than they expected, they immediatelly started a coordinated attack on our country,” he said.

He said that 85 countries recognized Kosovo while his critics were in power and that since he took over as president just nine countries have recognized Kosovo and 14 have revoked their decisions. Vucic said the Kosovo Albanians are saying that an agreement is near every day so that they can blame the Serbs if no agreement is reached.

“We can’t let them take everything from us and say that was nice. They will never see the Serbian leadership do that,” the president said.
