Nikolic: We are not ready to violate the constitution because of Kosovo (Vecernje Novosti)
Serbia would have to find another president and prime minister, who would be willing to violate the Constitution and talk with representatives of Pristina as representatives of an independent state, said Tomislav Nikolic.
Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic said today that the EU would expect from Belgrade to complete negotiations with Pristina and to fully regulate its position on Kosovo.
"The EU does not want to act as in some previous cases where the membership received a state that did not regulate their internal relations," Nikolic said at a joint press conference with EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn.
Serbia, according to Nikolic, sees no problem to resume talks with Pristina administration and to implement all agreed, including the formation of the Community/Association of Serbian municipalities.
He warned, however, talks will not get far if Pristina representatives continue to negotiate as they are representing an independent state.
"According to the Constitution of Serbia, we cannot talk with Kosovo as an independent state. Serbia would have to find another president and prime minister, who would be willing to violate the Constitution and talk with representatives of Pristina as representatives of an independent state. Two of us are certainly not ready for this," Nikolic said.
He stated that part of the competences were transferred from EULEX to Pristina administration and that it is true that Belgrade does not have much influence on what happens in Kosovo, but the EU and the UN have this influence, and they have to take care.
Resolution 1244 does not recognize the independence of Kosovo, but states that Kosovo is part of Serbia and that a final solution will be reached through talks, Nikolic said and recalled that the dialogue is at standstill because no one knows who would be the negotiator from Pristina side considering that there a government is not formed.
"When the Pristina delegation is ready, the Serbian delegation will be at the agreed time and at the agreed place," concluded Nikolic.
