Zivadin Jovanovic: NATO and EU confirmed sovereignty of Serbia over Kosovo (Vecernje Novosti)
UN SC Resolution 1244 is a final decision on Kosovo status and represents a synthesis of interests of all counties in the world, former head of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia diplomacy, Zivadin Jovanovic told Vecernje Novosti daily.
This solution was reached in a difficult negotiation, under NATO bombs of Serbia (respectively Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) and world power centers. The agreement was harmonized for three months and at many levels, Jovanovic, who was a participant and “logistic man” in this negotiation further said.
According to him, it is not surprising that Russian President Vladimir Putin persistently mentions Resolution 1244 as a basis for the status of Kosovo, while Prime Minister of Cyprus, the Spanish King, Austrian Vice Prime Minister and other leaders including from China, India, Latin American and African states are saying the same.
Jovanovic claims that the significance and weight of this document (1244) can be compared with decisions of Vienna and Berlin congresses that arranged relations in Europe in XIX century, Vecernje Novosti reported.
“Resolution 1244 is a symbol of defense of a fundamental international law principles. Russia, China, India, Spain and most of the world do not defend these principles just because of Serbian but also because of their own interests,” Jvanovic added.
Commenting on shifting negotiations from the UN to the EU, Jovanovic said he sees no reason to have another legal document. “Resolution 1244 is the highest legally binding document, the final decision on the status and not a paper for modeling. Why would some new legal document be better, more certain and more respected? For the sake of strengthening global confrontation, because of the crisis in the EU or because of the fundamental changes in the world?”
“Rights of Serbia are reality if we do not renounce them and if our rights are more important to us then inaccuracies of others,” he told Vecernje Novosti.
Commenting on the Belgrade-Pristina agreements reached in Brussels, Zivanovic said he believes it is more about dictate from the EU, however, Serbia promptly implemented what it was on her side, while not a single “concession” of Pristina came into life. Serbia withdrew reality from the north, but did not get Community of the Serb Municipalities. If we were more cautious, maybe we would not complain because Pristina does not deliver information related to Ivanovic murder probe, Zivanovic told Vecernje Novosti.
