Demarcation of the border between Kosovo and Montenegro was defined by the NATO multiethnic forces. The entire debate so far on the issue appears to have been vain.
Gazeta Fjala found out that the borderline between Kosovo and Montenegro was confirmed by Kumanovo Agreement, which ended presence of Serbian armed forces in Kosovo.
This agreement has defined Kosovo’s borderline, by respecting the border situation of 1988.
Brussels-based correspondent Augustin Palokaj writes in an opinion piece that judging from statements made by politicians in Kosovo, U.S. President Barack Obama is more concerned about the fate of some pastures and mountains along the Kosovo-Montenegro border than about the killing of police officers and street protests in the U.S., the chaos in Turkey following the coup attempt, the fight against terror, the NATO Summit or the U.S. presidential elections.
Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) Secretary, Basri Musmurati, has denied reports in some media according to which the PDK is reserved on the border-demarcation deal between Kosovo and Montenegro. Musmurati told the news website that the PDK maintains the same position on the matter. “We have not discussed this issue. But it needs to go forward,” he was quoted as saying.
Ramush Haradinaj, leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), said today he is confident that Montenegro will contribute to a rightful solution of the border demarcation issue. Haradinaj also thanked the Albanian community living in the U.S. for their reaction toward the demarcation deal. “I would like to thank all Albanians living in the United States, for opposing the current version of the border-demarcation deal with Montenegro.
Vetëvendosje MP Donika Kadaj-Bujupi said today in Pristina that the demarcation deal with Montenegro will be submitted to the Kosovo Assembly this week. “We are receiving official information that it will be submitted for ratification this week,” Kadaj-Bujupi told reporters in Pristina today. She added that the Vetëvendosje Movement will use all means to stop the ratification of the demarcation deal. Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) MP Vjosa Osmani said calling an extraordinary session of the Assembly to ratify the deal is a hasty decision.
Most news websites cover Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) MP Pal Lekaj’s call to other MPs not to ratify the current version of the border demarcation deal with Montenegro. “If you think by ratifying an agreement that is damaging for the country will help you stay in power for longer, perhaps in the political sense you could be right, but nature has its own rules and once you are no longer in power, the future generations will rightfully judge you as traitors. More than a mistake, the ratification of the demarcation deal will be a crime.
The Pristina-based Kosovo Democratic Institute (KDI) issued a media communique today saying that uncertainties surrounding the border demarcation between Kosovo and Montenegro should be clarified, before the Kosovo government sends the demarcation deal for ratification to the Assembly. The communique notes: “Nearly one year after the signing of the agreement on the border between Kosovo and Montenegro, there is a need for an open parliamentary debate on the matter. The delineation of Kosovo’s borders is important for its political future and overall security.
Deputy Prime Minister of Kosovo, Hajredin Kuçi, stated that messages of the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs at the United States Department, Victoria Nuland, on the demarcation issue, are good for the government. “Those messages will be taken seriously by the government,” Kuçi said. Deputy Prime Minister of Kosovo, Hajredin Kuçi, said during the introduction of the future Minister of Justice, that “we will use each opportunity to find a consensus on proceeding the agreement further.”
The Kosovo government seems determined to send the border-demarcation deal with Montenegro to the Assembly. Unnamed sources told RTV Dukagjini that the government will meet on Wednesday at 10:00 to adopt the demarcation deal and then submit it to the Assembly. According to the same sources, the Assembly will meet in an extraordinary session to ratify the deal. “The agreement with Montenegro will be submitted [to the Assembly] on Wednesday. Vetëvendosje MP Donika Kadaj-Bujupi said today that the Kosovo government would make a “provocation” if it decided to submit to the Kosovo Assembly the border-demarcation with Montenegro. Kadaj-Bujupi said the Vetëvendosje Movement will oppose the current version of the agreement and ask for a review of the document. “The border-demarcation agreement will produce new crises,” she added.
