Battling the illiterates (Koha Ditore)
Columnist Lumir Abdixhiku writes that on the day Kosovo was making the first major international achievement this year, a step forward towards UNESCO membership, “illiterates and usurpers” got together to deliver a final blow to the University of Pristina (UP) by dismissing its rector, Ramadan Zejnullahu. The move, says Abdixhiku, was the most shameful, scandalous and irritating thing anyone in Kosovo did in quite a while and as a result, the public reaction was overwhelming. This in turn made the policymakers react and fix what was still fixable. Abdixhiku goes on to says that the fact that the UP receives each year 30 million euro from the Kosovo budget, of which 22 million go on salary for the university staff, makes is a suitable target for different political groups. The biggest damage however, according to Abdixhiku, comes from the indifference of a whole generation of students to stand up for their rights but for the sake of the new generations that will study at the UP, this generation should take a stance. A stance in favour of those who promote reforms and this promotion has no middle. There can be no compromise between the plagiarism and genuineness, no compromise with “illiterates and usurpers.” The battle for reform has to be seen through and it is not enough to fix one mistake. All the usurpers of the education system have to go and pave way for new people with integrity and knowledge, remarks Abdixhiku.
