Kosovo Serb charged with war crimes after spending months in jail (N1, KoSSev)
A Kosovo Serb who has spent several months in jail has been charged with war crimes committed in 1999 in the town of Pec, the KoSSev news portal reported on Tuesday.
The Special Prosecution indicted Zoran Djokic of Pec for war crimes against the civilian population in March and April of 1999, a prosecution press release said.
KoSSev quoted defence lawyers as saying that there isn’t enough evidence in the indictment to convict his client, adding that the indictment is based on statements by witnesses who said they heard that Djokic was at the site of the crimes.
The prosecution press release said that Djokic committed crimes against civilians with an unidentified criminal Serb group in a suburb of Pec. It alleged that they broke into Albanian houses, forced the inhabitants out and tortured and killed them. It said that Djokic and the others were wearing Serbian police and military uniforms.
The lawyers said that Djokic lived in Kosovska Mitrovica up to 2015, working for several NGOs and for the Ministry of Communities for a while where he underwent security checks. Djokic was arrested at the Jarinje crossing on February 2, 2019.
