Rejection of the opposition will be even more powerful (Koha Ditore)

The Assembly of Kosovo faces a dilemma as to whether to begin the first spring session with the election of the new president of Kosovo. Sources within the Assembly mention the 11 February as a possible date for the election of the President. Another possibility that was mentioned is to start with a normal working session to learn more about the opposition's approach. However, there has been no official confirmation of this news.

President Jahjaga meets Maltese Foreign Minister, George Vella (Koha)

Kosovo’s President Atifete Jahjaga received Maltese Foreign Minister George Vella today, with whom she discussed the latest developments in Kosovo, as well as the processes related to meeting the criteria for visa liberalization and the Stabilization and Association Agreement with the European Union. Jahajga and Vella also discussed the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia. Jahjaga stressed the importance of implementing the agreements reached in this process and urged that implementation of these agreements is a precondition for Serbia's EU membership.

Thaci: US supports Kosovo institutions and election of President (Koha)

Kosovo’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Hashim Thaci, said today that the ruling-coalition is in close consultation about his election as President of Kosovo, which according to him, will take place in February. “We will respect all constitutional procedure,” Thaci said. He said there had been no discussions related to changes in the government yet. He also spoke about his meeting with the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, saying that the United States support Kosovo institutions and the presidential election process.

Civil society activists call for early elections (Koha)

In an open letter, a group of civil society activists urged the people of Kosovo to support early elections as the only way to resolve the current political stalemate. “We live in days of mistrust in the country’s institutions, of doubts in the power of the citizen and in the possibility for social change. Therefore, we support calls for early parliamentary elections,” the letter signed by eleven civil society figures reads.

Implementation of agreement with Serbia on diploma recognition to begin on 1 March (Koha)

Delegations of Kosovo and Serbia, facilitated by the European Union, agreed last week in Brussels to begin implementing the agreement on mutual recognition of diplomas on 1 March. Kosovo’s minister without portfolio and head negotiator Edita Tahiri said the present agreement is broader than that of 2011 as it includes mutual recognition of diplomas of all levels of education.

Thaci: a new European era for Kosovo has begun today (Koha Ditore)

Kosovo's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hashim Thaci, said that the voting of the European Parliament for the ratification of the Stabilization Association Agreement with Kosovo, marks a new era for the youngest European state.

“The European Parliament gave a majority vote in favor of the ratification of the Stabilization Association Agreement with Kosovo. This is a historical moment and the first formal contract between Kosovo and the EU,” wrote Thaci on his Facebook profile page.

Schwendiman: Special court to be backed by all stakeholders (Koha)

The prosecutor of the Special Investigative Task Force, David Schwendiman, said that reports that the special court will be based in The Hague demonstrates that allegations contained in the Council of Europe report of 2011 are being taken into consideration. In a statement to the Belgrade news agency Beta, Schwendiman said it is crucial that the establishment of the special court be supported by all stakeholders in order to respect all international judicial standards.

Serbia’s general elections also in Kosovo (Koha Ditore)

Serbia’s general elections are expected to be held also in Kosovo, and OSCE will be most probably requested to offer technical help.

There will be no local elections of Serbia, being that Brussels agreement obliges Kosovo Serbs to hold their elections according to Kosovo’s election system.

Head of the Council for Kosovo at the Serbian Assembly, Milovan Drecun, told Belgrade media that Serbia’s general elections will be held in Kosovo, no matter eventual obstacles by Pristina.
