According to Burim Etemaj, personal grudges of the political leaders and their greed for power has put Kosovo in a political and institutional stalemate. “Each block blames the other for the created situation. The Democratic Party of Kosovo claims to have the votes of the sovereign and the decision of the Constitutional Court to establish the institutions, but the truth that this party does not have the required numbers at the Assembly is already known by everyone. On the other hand, the coalition block which has united not due to some affiliation for each other but to bring down PDK, claims to have the right to establish the institutions by having the majority of deputies at the Assembly, but this right was not given to them by the votes of the people and neither was it given by the Constitutional Court.
And while the political game of numbers continues with stubbornness, the population is suffering the consequences. Therefore the question is do they deserve this torture? Of course not. They passed their own test on 8 June, by becoming an example in the region for regular election process. Instead of speedy establishment of institutions, opening of new jobs, and Euro-Atlantic perspective, they received the blockade for a present. The last session on Thursday proved that coalition block’s majority at the Assembly is unsustainable and dysfunctional. Cynical people even say that they consumed point 127 as well.
Considering the current positions of both sides and failure of the President to find a solution, the best solution for the political stalemate are elections. Even though some parties and foreign diplomats claim that elections are expensive, they certainly cost less than the damage caused to Kosovo’s economy, social peace and the image, by the political stalemate. Any other compromised solution would not be in accordance with the free will of the people, therefore it would damage their interests. There is no time to waste,” concludes Etemaj.
