The Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. Congress held a debate in which they expressed different views on the situation in Serbia and Kosovo. A representative of the Department of State, Jonathan Moore, had to explain in detail the views of the U.S. administration.

At the two-hour session, under the name “Kosovo and Serbia: The Road to Peace”, the views of the Committee members, the State Department, and representatives of the pro-Albanian non-governmental organizations were expressed, while the Serbian positions were presented by Washington analyst  Obrad Kesic.

Californian Republican congressman Dana Rohrabaker and party colleague from Texas, Ted Poe had particularly sharp and thorough questioning. Rohrabaker asked Moore whether it is true that according to the Brussels agreement, the Kosovo Security Force is prohibited from entering the north. It was only at the second attempt that he managed to get a definite answer, “yes, it is.”

Rohrabaker, when Kosovo declared independence, was a supporter of the process. Now, in his opening speech, said that he did it due to the “right to self-determination” also mentioned in the U.S. Constitution. He, however, said that he now advocates for giving equal rights to the Kosovo Serbs in the north, which a large percentage do not want to live in an independent Kosovo.

“You’re talking about a rule of law as a solution for people that are hundreds of years in a hostile relationship. Why not allow northern Kosovo Serbs join Serbia and Albanians from Presevo Valley join Kosovo?” asked Rorabaker.
