Kosovska Mitrovica, Zvecan, Beograd – Ceremonial and the constituent session of the four Serbian municipalities in northern Kosovo and Metohija no longer depend on the mayors, but the oldest members who should convene it until 11 January. In the field speculate that they might be held on the third day of Orthodox Christmas, 9 January, although is mentioned and 17 January.

According to the Kosovo Law on Local Self-Government, mayors are obliged to convene ceremonial session within 15 days of publication of the final results of the election. That deadline expired on 27 December, as the Central Election Commission announced final results of the recent municipal elections in Kosovo on 12 December. Now it is the turn of the oldest members, who have the same deadline. If they do not do so, the last chance for the constitution of local government is that in the next 15 days the municipal majority to convene a session, otherwise elections should be held again.

All Serbian majority municipalities south of the Ibar constituted their municipal government. At the request of the EU and the Government of Serbia inaugural meeting of the North Mitrovica, Zvecan, Leposavic and Zubin Potok announced for the 24th December have been cancelled at the last minute, apparently because of the controversial invitation. Serbian municipalities in northern Kosovo for the first time since the introduction of the UN protectorate, will be formed in the system of local self-government of self-proclaimed state of Kosovo, which for the first time, based on the Brussels Treaty , conducted elections in this part of Kosovo.

– So far, no one knows the exact date of formal sessions, or whether all four municipal assemblies will be held together or separately. Now all depends on the oldest representatives in all four municipal assemblies – told Danas Vučina Jankovic, the newly elected mayor of Zvecan.

Oliver Ivanovic of Civic Initiatives SDP explains to Danas that, there was no cancellation of the inaugural meeting, for the 9th January the first session of the North Mitrovica was planned where the municipal authorities were supposed to be elected. He does not rule out that in the present circumstances could be held simultaneously and festive and elective sessions, but said that the list “Srpska” is acting as it is “in an election campaign.”

Slobodan Petrovic, Kosovo’s deputy prime minister and minister of local government, told Radio Kosovo that the constitutive session of the municipalities in northern Kosovo, will be held in accordance with the laws of Kosovo.
