The paper’s front-page editorial notes that the killing of a 14 year-old yesterday in Pristina has shocked the whole Kosovo public. “The act is made even more tragic by the fact that the victim was executed on the yard of an elementary school in Pristina … The lack of security measures in school facilities makes it very difficult to resolve such cases especially when there are no eyewitnesses. This is not the first time that a homicide occurs in the vicinity of educational institutions. Although we have seen similar cases in the past, the Ministry of Education and municipal authorities have not found it reasonable to step up security measures. There is growing insecurity in Kosovo due to lack of rule of law, increased crime rates, the grave social crises, weak institutions and police who are incapable of arresting perpetrators of violent acts. The state needs to allocate additional funds for better security in schools. Meanwhile, local and central authorities need to allocate funds for installing cameras outside school facilities that will help law enforcement authorities resolve various cases.”
