Serbia is “a free country” and in terms of respect for civil and political rights and freedoms its “grades” are close to the maximum, a U.S. based NGO has said.

In its annual analysis, Freedom House states that “other free countries in the Balkan region comprise Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro,” while “Macedonia and Kosovo are as partially free.”

Freedom House ranked countries on the scale from one to seven, with one signifying the highest degree of freedom and seven being the lowest degree.

Serbia earned grade two in all three categories, including political rights, freedom and respect of civil rights, and this is the rank it has been continuously holding since 2010.

Slovenia ranked best in the region with grade one, while Kosovo earned grade five for political rights and four for civil freedoms. The Freedom House report covers the entire year of 2013.
