Hashim Thaci in the numbers trap (Tribuna)

Analyst Armand Shkullaku writes in a column for the paper that Fatmir Limaj and Jakup Krasniqi leaving PDK has brought to surface once again the crisis in the Hashim Thaci’s party. This crisis, he adds, is not so much about number at the Assembly which have shrunk considerably but more with an overall decline of a political alternative. The party is facing recently the failure of a system it tried to set up since taking power and the recent developments like the students’ protests and EULEX arrests of government officials are an indication of this.

The two sides of this crisis make it evident where Thaci governance failed. First of all, it tried to impose a reality different from the one citizens witness on daily basis. Secondly, it failed to create a serious project, a political philosophy for the citizens and instead, it based its survival on short-term estimates, traps and tactics to suffice “crossing of a river.”

In addition to Limaj and Krasniqi departure, recent arrest of Uke Rugova, Thaci’s ally at the Government, and at least three other MPs expected to join a new political party, will turn the ruling coalition a minority at the Assembly and the slightest challenge could overthrow it, considers Shkullaku.

He warns that the ongoing protests against misuses at the University of Pristina could soon transform into a general sign of discontent with the way Kosovo is being governed.

It is of little relevance whether next parliamentary elections will be held on the scheduled time or there will be early elections, says Shkullaku. “Whenever these elections do take place, one thing is for sure and that is that PDK will face the shrinking it is experiencing. Fallout with Limaj, absence from the ground of those who filled sacks of votes, absence of responsibility towards the citizens, declining authority of allies and EULEX shadow, can certainly lead to an election crisis.”
