Government of Kosovo reached a decision today to transform the Kosovo Security Force into Kosovo Armed Forces. In addition, the Ministry of KSF will transform into the Ministry of Defence.

Prime Minister of Kosovo said that one of the tasks of the newly-formed KAF will be protection of Kosovo’s territorial sovereignty. He also announced that the Kosovo Armed Forces will have 5,000 active troops and 3,000 reserve.

At the opening of the meeting in which the Government took the decision for KSF transformation, Prime Minister Hashim Thaci recalled that a day ago, the Steering Committee for Security Sector Strategic Review approved the analysis on the security sector review.

He also said that careful studies of all security aspects have been carried out in order to identify the real needs of the state and their citizens, as well as to define the roles and capacities of each security institution.

He said these transformations will be in the benefit of the country and the citizens, regardless of their ethnic, religious or political background. This is also beneficial for the entire region, without exceptions. It is in the interest of Euro-Atlantic integrations and proves determination that Kosovo is ready to transform and generate more security and guarantee its own safety and based on further steps, become a relevant factor of regional as well as global security, said Thaci on the occasion.
