The Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) and the Vetevendosje Movement have condemned today’s arrest of protesters in Prizren who are demanding the resignation of Prizren mayor Ramadan Muja. Vetevendosje said the arrest of Artan Abrashi, member of the Prizren municipal assembly, was politically motivated. Meanwhile, the Pristina-based Kosovo Democratic Institute (KDI) has also called for Muja’s resignation.

The LDK branch in Prizren said today that arrests are a blow against values of freedom and democracy and called for the immediate release of peaceful protesters. The LDK branch even called for participation in Wednesday’s protest against Muja. “We reiterate our position as LDK that Ramadan Muja, who was found guilty by the court, needs to resign as soon as possible,” the LDK communiqué said.

The Kosovo Democratic Institute has called on Muja and his associates to resign after they were found guilty for misuse of duty by the Basic Court in Prizren. Jetmir Bakia, from the KDI, said Muja has lost legitimacy and that he needs to submit an irrevocable resignation. “The KDI believes that if Muja remains in the position of Prizren mayor this will damage the image of institutions and the people of Prizren,” Bakia said.
