The front page editorial of this daily stated that Pristina’s demands during negotiations with EU officials on EULEX’s mandate are exaggerated. The Kosovo Government insists on taking over all executive competencies from EULEX, while objecting to the establishment of the Tribunal, which would deal with crimes during and after the conflict. This would save individuals that would be impacted politically or institutionally, whose names were often mentioned in internationals’ files for crimes after 1999, from prosecution.
It will be difficult to reach a consensus at this pre-election period, however, Kosovo politicians should not block the processes. Since the leading politicians were not capable of consolidating the justice system, internationals should remain the only guarantee, despite the fact that this would prove the inefficiency of Kosovo’s institutions.
“Parties and Kosovo state politicians should draw lessons from this failure to avoid situations of finding themselves in front of a ‘done deal’, not being able to choose but take whatever the international community offers,” concludes this daily.
