Politicking with the KLA (Zeri)

Editor Milaim Shefkiu writes that the Kosovo Liberation Army was used by all political parties in the post-war period in Kosovo. “One camp was asking for votes in the name of the KLA, while the other camp was getting votes by accusing the KLA. This practice continues to this day, when political parties are playing ping pong [table tennis] with the law on veterans of the former Kosovo Liberation Army … Prime Minister Hashim Thaci threatened to call an extraordinary session of parliament for the law, the veterans threatened to organize protests if the law is not passed soon, the LDK wants the former Ministry of Defense to be included in the law, whereas Vetevendosje accuses the PDK and LDK of playing games with the law. All three parties accuse one another of using the law on veterans for their election campaigns; while war veterans realize that they have become tools of political parties and they are incapable of helping themselves … If the law is for KLA veterans, then it should include all soldiers who wore KLA uniforms. If members of the former Ministry of Defense were part of the KLA they should enjoy the privileges granted by the law on war veterans. But if they were not KLA, the law is for KLA veterans and not for other political and party structures. The blockade by the LDK is more than political, the same as Thaci’s decision to send the law to parliament before elections.”
