The main focus of the Serbian Progressive Party should be how to concentrate power for the sake of Serbian citizens. For the first time, there is a real chance to approach the long-time considered amendment of the Serbian Constitution, which would require amending the preamble of Kosovo.

“I think it would facilitate joining the EU process,” said Peter Beyer, a member of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the Bundestag.

Speaking about the key tasks of the new Serbian government, Beyer emphasized the fight against corruption and organized crime, the normalization of relations with Kosovo, the adoption of court rulings on corruption and organized crime, the ambitious efforts to improve rule of law, and the economic reforms that will lead to the prosperity of citizens, job creation and budget consolidation.

A representative of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party refused to directly answer Danas’s question regarding whether he expects the SNS to form a new government with the Socialist Party of Serbia, stating that he “refrains from speculation.”

“However, I can say, as someone who comes from a country where a new government with a huge majority in the Bundestag was recently formed, that every government is recommended to resist challenges of power. This means that, on the one hand, with a large majority in parliament, the government can lead the country forward without having to do a lot of compromises. On the other hand, the arrogant use of power is never a good thing and every democratic country needs a successful opposition,” warned Beyer.

Commenting on the statement of the future Prime Minister, Aleksandar Vucic, that he wants a government that will work as a team, like the German Bayern, Beyer said that the election results are a clear signal of the Serbian people. “So, the government has received a tremendous responsibility, which is to be aware and to act accordingly. It remains to be seen whether Vucic will fulfill his promises. For the sake of the people of Serbia, we can only hope that the new government quickly and ambitiously will implement reform,” concluded Peter Beyer.
